Mercy Kemboi
Mercy Kemboi is a biomedical research scientist from Kenya, currently pursuing an MSc in Applied Cancer Science at the Department of Oncology, University of Oxford. She is a Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholar and a member of Green Templeton College.
During her undergraduate studies, Mercy conducted research on mycotoxins, identifying Aspergillus strains linked to liver cancer in individuals consuming contaminated maize. This project sparked her interest in research and molecular medicine. She later gained practical experience as a research assistant at the AMPATH Reference Laboratory, where she worked in the molecular laboratory, performing biopsies and assisting in the diagnosis of leukaemia and lymphoma. These experiences strengthened her commitment to cancer research and deepened her understanding of the transformation of normal cells into cancerous ones.
Mercy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science and Technology from Egerton University, graduating with first-class honours.
Following her studies at Oxford, Mercy plans to train young scientists, advocate for the establishment of more cancer research centres in Kenya and across Africa, and contribute to policy development in biomedical research. She also aims to pursue a PhD in cancer research. Beyond her academic work, Mercy supports young girls through the Northern Daughters Africa Foundation (NORDAf) and enjoys singing in her spare time.
