Hamdi Mohamed
Hamdi was born in and spent his adult life attending primary and secondary school in the Dadaab refugee camps on the Kenya-Somali border. In 2019, he joined the University of Nairobi to pursue his Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Diplomacy under the DAFI scholarship program, which is sponsored by the German government and implemented by UNHCR. He also completed a three-month online course on refugee and forced migration studies delivered by the Refugee Studies Centre at Oxford. Additionally, he participated in a three-month Graduate Attachment Scheme (GAS) with the British Institute in Eastern Africa and the Refugee-Led Research Hub in Nairobi to acquire research skills and prepare for his graduate program.
Before joining Oxford, Hamdi worked with various NGOs in Dadaab, serving in multiple positions, including teacher and community mobiliser with the Norwegian Refugee Council and Windle International Kenya, respectively. Passionate about advancing gender equity and inclusion through better development policies, he is currently working on a research project focused on marginalised Somali refugee girls' access to education in Dadaab.
After completing his MSc in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies at the University of Oxford, Hamdi intends to support gender equity in education and employment in Somalia.
