Abdella Mohammed

Abdella Mohammed is pursuing an MSc in Mathematical Sciences at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford. He is a Mastercard Foundation Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) Scholar and a member of Somerville College.

Abdella graduated with First Class Honours in Master of Mathematics (MMath) from the University of Kent in July 2024. He has a strong passion for pure mathematics, with his MMath dissertation focused on the representation theory of diagram algebras, supervised by Dr Rowena Paget. His research involved studying diagram algebras as subsets of cellular algebras, a class introduced by Graham and Lehrer in 1996. Using methods developed by Dr Paget and Reuben Green, Abdella successfully demonstrated that the Brauer algebra is cellular, further fueling his growing interest in areas of pure mathematics that integrate multiple fields.

During the summer of 2024, Abdella worked as an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Intern with Professor Ben Davison at the University of Edinburgh, where he explored connections between indecomposable representations of quivers, Kac’s polynomials, and cuspidal polynomials.

In addition to his academic work, Abdella is dedicated to outreach and has been actively involved in programs aimed at making mathematics more accessible. He served as a tutor for Levelling Up: Mathematics for Black Heritage Students, organised by the London Mathematical Society, and as Lead Ambassador for the University of Kent's Targeted Outreach program, which supports care-experienced students.
